UP's Northern type 4-8-4

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the “Living Legend” on a few occasions. That thing is a beast. It’s absolutely awesome that it has never been stricken from the active roster. From what I’ve heard out of the Cheyenne shops, it’s getting some much overdue attention now that 4014 is mostly done. Ed Dickens has done a fantastic job of gutting and rebuilding the UP steam shop. It’s unfortunate that 3985 may never see the main again, but I guess having 4014 and 844 done right and kept operating is worth it. I just hope it doesn’t end up in a park somewhere.

In 1973 ish I was in the cab of 844 (8444 then) It was picking up water at Wallula Wa. on the way to Expo 74 in Spokane. Dad was leveling land across highway 12 and saw it come in to the station and dropped everything to jump in the pickup and go check it out. The crew at that time was pretty friendly. And not a foamer in sight.

I know this is a train thread, but it's got alot to do with big diesel power so bare with me....

The current project I'm on is more data storage for FB..🙄

32 emergency gen-sets on this building alone (with the same amount going on each of the 3 other buildings going up beside it).

Generator specs;

2500 hp. 16 cyl. Rolls-Royce MTU diesel making 2500 KW of power. Each unit sits on top of a 3k gallon fuel tank..

Alternator in the fore ground. The exhaust from the 4 turbos dump into that big muffler above the engine and out the 20" 90 through the roof.

Intake manifold ( above alternator) feeding the turbos..

The 4 turbos.

Right side of engine. In the foreground is a set of 5 ( big) oil filters.

The oil filters again and for scale, that cooling fan behind the radiator is 6ft. in diameter.

Another right side engine pic. I couldn't access the left side.

16 gen-sets to the North...

...16 South.
