The original movie was done in 1964. Starred Henry Fonda. I remember it as being a bit of a thriller, especially given how things were in 1964.

Book was good, original movie was also good - likely Dr. Strangeglove is closer to the truth as it showcases insanity and self interest while the former assume cooler heads prevail with a sacrifice ( bullshitr)

Dr. Strangelove is definitely a classic and still highly entertaining. Also falling into that cold war genre and timeframe of '63 -'64 is "Seven Days In May". That was also a decent film with a very good cast.

Dr. Strangelove had James Earl Jones. I think he was the navigator on the B-52. Slim Pickens was the pilot. Keenan Wynn was Col. Bat Guano. Peter Sellers played at least three parts . ... the crazy Nazi scientist, POTUS, and the English Liaison officer to the SAC base. And George C Scott. And more ...

Wife hates it. Makes me laugh.

Side note ... I worked at Sandia Labs, spent just less than half of that on weapon projects. My lever two manager was surprised at how many of the young engineers had not seen the movie. Satire is lost on the new folk. All they know is the current PC crap.

Original Fail Safe was also a good movie. Enjoyed that one too. Not satire, however.

And don't forget "...you can't fight in here, this is the war room!"

ahh my mistake - similar type of movie. Good call.

1964 Fail safe was excellant. Just dialogue mostly. B-52 drops the bomb on Moscow, they are talking to the US ambassador on the phone as it melts. A B-58 drops on New York city. Dr. Strange love is just so perfect in so many ways. Another really good one is the Bedford Incident. What is good about these movies is there are no woman as main characters. There is also 7 Days in May (1964).
Back when I was young had an intership where I worked on a data unit in the reentry unit for the Trident missle. In the same shop they had a sealed area which built parts for certain nuclear "dead man" switches. One day one of the machinists handed me thru the trap door a paperweight to take back to school. A block of Tungsten. Just before I went back to school I was asked to clean out a storeroom, in which I was to donate all the parts to the physics department. I did but also took a Vela satellite which I hung in the dorm room ( quarter scale engineering module). They did ask for it back. Life was so different then.
