Good evening all,

I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to the FAL, and I have a question regarding the lowers for the G1 and StG58. From what I’ve seen, they are identical (externally, at least). They have the same fire control selector markings, and the serial number fonts look the same, as well. Is there anyway to differentiate between the two?

Thanks!

Here are some photos of internal lightening cuts of known G1 (4-digit serial) and known Belgian StG (22xxx serial). Also, an unserialized replacement G1 lower, w/ scallop for using a round to remove the hammer spring.

I've also noticed the cuts on either side, fwd on the recoil block are different. Scalloped on the 'known G1' and 'Belgian StG', but straight-cut on the replacement G1 lower.

Interesting. I’ve got one that has the even horizontal lines under the rear sight, but doesn’t have the G1 internal lightening cuts. Maybe an early StG58?

Unfortunately, it’s a hard to get a great picture of the inside of the lower with the FCG in the way. For what it’s worth, this one has a DSA G1 upper receiver connected to it.

Good, correct info, the type we can always get from you.
Myself, I wouldn't call that an indication of the origin of the lower since those parts aren't a part of the lower itself and could be replacements. If there was a guarantee the lower assembly was fully original, maybe. Of course, that's impossible to know.

Maybe a more accurate question would be what are the differences between stripped G1 and StG58 lowers. FN made StG are practically identical to G1 to my knowledge.

FN produced StG & G1 lowers are the same. The only way to tell the original production pieces apart is by date codes or if it's married to other parts in the original kit. Remember they were both contracted within a year of one another. A lower dated after the 100k G1 delivery can't be G1.

Also, a G1 later spare from comes in at least 2 variations. 1st being identical to the original G1 & StG lowers. The 2nd having the extra relief cut above the "S".

OP, Does this kit have a matched barrel or B/C group? If you pull the butt there are a multitude of stamps on the back of the lower.....there may or may not be a box proof...... |7| is 1957. The line positions differentiate between quarters.

I will have to check the back of the lower when I get home. But the B/C is not matching to this lower. The lower‘s original serial was also under 100k, it’s in the 61000 range.

🤦 ... 🤣 .... the serial # is in the 60,000 range..... has it dawned on you yet Troy? ..... 🤣

The lower is a G1.

Steyr switched to a different relief cut under the rear sight in the low 40,000 range. Only way that lower is from an StG is if it were a replacement lower and that is highly unlikely.

Steyr also eliminated lightening cuts in the lowers long before 60,000.
